Her audition: Stephanie Skipper, 33, of Nashville, Tenn., performed an emotional version of Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece by Piece.” Blake Shelton and Adam Levine turned late in the performance. Stephanie decided to join Team Adam.

Her background: Stephanie’s own father was absent during her childhood, one reason she could relate so well to Kelly’s song. Stephanie says she thinks her father’s absence is also one reason she was so shy growing up. “I’ve thought about my dad watching NBC, turning the show on, and there I am,” she admits. As for her music, Stephanie says she and her husband Tim were performing as a duo. Then he got a job offer that offered the family more stability. “We we had to lay down the band,” she explained. “I can’t believe I’m going to pick it back up as a solo artist.”

What the show didn’t show:

* She’s a native of State College, Pa., and granddaughter of former Penn State soccer coach Ken Hosterman.

* Stephanie attended Greenville College in Illinois and it was there that she met TobyMac after winning a Battle of the Bands competition. He signed her to his Gotee Records label.

* As Christian artist Stephanie Smith, she released an album and two EPs between 2008 and 2010.

* Stephanie was also a featured vocalist on a 2010 single called “God Save Us the Foolish Kings” by the alternative rock band House of Heroes.

* In November of 2012, she married Tim Skipper, frontman for House of Heroes. They formed the singer-songwriter duo Copperlily.

* As Copperlily, the couple released a debut EP (“Love is a Legend”) in 2014, a full-length self-title album in 2015 and a Christmas EP later than year. Be sure to check out “The Beautiful Unseen.”

* Their most recent release was an excellent single “I Do Right Now,” released in 2016 to coincide with their adventures in house hunting (they looked at more than 50 homes before choosing one, Stephanie says) as documented on “House Hunters.” You can check out the song below. Tim has since taken a job in radio.

* As for her solo sound this time around, Stephanie told Voice Views, “I love pop music. I love that it’s kind of an umbrella of all things, a melting pot of many different genres. I really do see myself pursuing something that’s catchy, but creative. I’m sure there will be elements of that singer-songwriter in there and my little pop-rocker will emerge as well.”

On picking Adam: “When Adam said something about digging below just the vocal performance of the song and telling the story, that had been a huge part of my process. Not just to sing the notes, because Kelly already did that beautifully, but to tell my story in the moment that I had.”
