You could say the Swon Brothers were inevitably drawn toward the music business.
When they were growing up, their parents had a traveling gospel music show.
Zach, now 27, recalls getting a drum set when he was 3 and joining his parents on stage as a young drummer at age 7.
Colton, now 24, joined the act as soon as he was old enough.
By ages 11 and 9, respectively, they were already thinking in terms of a Nashville record deal, insisting their parents make a stop there on the way to Disney.
They didn’t get the record deal, of course.
But they now have two independent country-rock albums to their credit — “Another Day” from 2009 and “Set List” from 2012 (both available on iTunes) — and a spot on The Voice as members of Team Blake.
For their Voice audition, they performed Tom Petty’s “American Girl” and enticed three judges to turn around.
But while Shakira and Usher lobbied for their services, there was never any question they’d join Team Blake, the guys said in a conference-call interview the day after their audition aired.
After all, Blake’s from Oklahoma; they’re from Muskogee.
“I think our fan base would have kicked us out of Oklahoma if we picked anyone else,” Zach said.
And while some of The Voice artists hold down full-time jobs to pay the bills while doing music on the side, that’s not the case with these guys.
“Making music is not a hobby,” they proclaim on their Facebook page. “It’s just what we do.”
Of course, they wish what they did paid better. Perhaps it will, after Voice fans are treated to more of what they call “Swon-certs.”
For now, they admit to still raiding their parents kitchen cabinets occasionally.
“Even though we have our own homes, we have very barren cabinets,” Zach said during that conference call.
This isn’t the duo’s first experience with singing shows. Colton made the Top 48 back on Season 7 of American Idol.
He got cut before the round of 24, and says he wasn’t exactly shattered by that outcome.
“I just had this sick feeling like, if I do make this, the duo thing is gonna be really hard to do,” he recalls on Facebook. “So right before that I was uneasy and I was almost praying I wouldn’t make it just because I knew that’s not what I really wanted. I really wanted to play music with my brother.”
To listen to a couple songs on which they play together, head to their Facebook band page or their YouTube channel. You can follow them on Twitter where they are @TheSwonBrothers.
Update: Defeated Christian Porter in the battle round on their version of Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down.” In the knockout round, they sang “Drift Away” and defeated Grace Askew, who performed “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” Performed “Fishin’ in the Dark” in the live playoffs and got the save from Blake.
“Oklahoma Lovin'” (from the 2012 album)
“Seven Bridges Road” and “Wanted Dead or Alive”
