Zae Romeo from The Voice Season 20

His audition: Zae Romeo, 21, of McKinney, Texas, performed “Falling” by Harry Styles. An impressive glory note early in the performance prompted chair turns from Kelly Clarkson and Nick Jonas. John Legend and Blake Shelton later turned as well. That made Zae one of just four singers to turn all four chairs in the blinds. Nick called his performance spiritual and phenomenal. Zae opted to join Team Nick.

Here’s more about Zae:

* As we heard on the show, Zae and his siblings were placed in foster care when he was just 3 years old. He called that a sad situation, because while some foster parents were great, there were other homes where there was “no love.”

* That changed when he was 6. He and his three siblings were all adopted into a “wonderful family” by the same couple, Zae told The Voice.

* Still, he ran away at one point when he was 16 after getting in trouble in school, deciding he would make a living by busking. After 10 days, he spotted a missing poster his adopted parents had posted and retuned home.

* Zae told voice Views that he started singing in middle school. He and a friend named Cora would perform around McKinney. She would play guitar and Zae would play the keys.

* As a solo performer and pop artist, Zae said he only performed “small gigs here and there” with a focus on “slower emotional pop songs.”

* He said the biggest thing he’d done musically prior to The Voice was leading worship at The Woodlands United Methodist Church. He currently lives in Woodlands, Texas.

* Zae says he’s led worship at several churches. He’s currently doing so at Conexion Church; he also teaches at Muse Mantra School of Music and Arts in Woodlands.

* Zae told Voice Views he’s been working on lots of original music and has a song called “Notice Me” that he plans to release as soon as he’s contractually permitted.

* As for his style of music, he says it’s “very similar to James Arthur in the sense that it is an emotional pop song that tells a story.”

* As for his coaching choice, Zae said he was impressed by how much Nick seemed to know about him just from the audition. “He was able to accurately guess a few of my influences and knew a lot about my voice.”
