Did you wonder what in the world Megan Joy was doing when she flapped her arms and made squawking noises as she headed to her seat in American Idol’s bottom three Wednesday night?
It’s quite simple, Megan said in her exit interview with the media Thursday afternoon.
“I love birds and bird noises,” the 22-year-old from Sandy, Utah, explained. “And I just decided, ‘If I’m going out, I’m going out with a bang, and I’m just going to be myself.'”
Heck, she even had some of the other contestants make caw sounds in her honor as she faced eliminated Wednesday night.
Now that’s an Idol first.
After what transpired over the last couple of days, Megan had a little more to chat about in her conference call interview than this season’s previous ousted Idols.
For instance, there was the incident Tuesday night. Judge Kara DioGuardi was criticizing Megan’s song choice. Suddenly, someone in the crowd shouted out: “Broken record.”
Hmm, the someone turned out to be Megan’s brother. For those who remember the story of the sleeve tattoo, he’s the wizard. (For those who don’t, here’s a link.)
How did Megan feel about the fact that her brother heckled Kara?
“I’m always proud of my brother,” she said. “He’s my boy. And he, like me, can’t help but be himself. I wasn’t surprised at all that he did it. It cracked me up. I’m glad Kara ended up taking it light-heartedly, though.”
But did she agree with her brother?
“Well, we do hear that comment a lot, you know.”
OK, then there was Wednesday night. Asked how she felt about Simon’s scathing critique of her performance of Bob Marley’s “Turn the Lights Down Low,” Megan told Ryan she didn’t care.
Simon threw the comment back at her later in the evening. Megan had been proclaimed the low vote-getter. Only a judges’ save could keep her on Idol. Ryan asked Simon if the judges would consider it. Simon addressed Megan instead: “With greatest respect, when you said you don’t care, nor do we.”
Ouch.
So does Megan regret her comment from earlier that evening?
Not in the least.
“I just was honest,” she said. “I cared about the competition. I didn’t want people to misunderstand me not caring. I just didn’t care that Simon didn’t like my song. I couldn’t help but be honest.”
She added later in the conference call interview: “I have no beef with Simon, and I don’t think he really has any with me.”
And the day’s other burning question: Will she get another tattoo (she already has seven) in tribute to her time on Idol?
Why, of course.
“I’ve had a lucky ring that I’ve worn the entire time and I’m going to have that tattooed on my ribs.”
As for the future, yeah, Megan would like to record music. But, hey, she’d also like to appear on the kids’ show “Yo Gabba Gabba.” Bottom line: she isn’t limiting her options.
“I like cartoons. I like doing voices. There are a couple of shows I’d like to make an appearance on. I’m down for whatever. Whatever life wants to introduce me to, I would love to dabble.”
But before any of that, there’s a long awaited reunion with her 2-year-old son Ryder, whom she’s been separated from for about two months. That will occur next Wednesday, after she wraps up some final Idol business.
“I’m going to hold him for as long as he’ll let me,” Megan said.”And I’m going to try not to sob like a lunatic because I’m sure he’ll just be confused and scared. It’s going to be beautiful. I just cannot wait.”
Coming next Tuesday: The Idols sing songs from the years they were born.
