Idols on the Music Chart

Music charts: Still waiting for the new Idols to make an impact

Adam Lambert arrives for the Gridlock New Year's Eve Bash at Paramount Studios Thursday. (AP Photo)A month after their albums debuted, Idol’s big three from season eight have yet to make much of an impact on the music charts.

Adam Lambert’s album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and quickly tumbled. Considering the press he’s gotten, album sales to date have to be disappointing. And none of his singles have taken off.

It’ll be interesting to see if Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta get a boost from their high-profile appearances on FOX’s New Year’s Eve show. Personally, I think Kris’ album is doing as well as can be expected, given the material.

I still have high hopes for Allison. Be sure to check out the video clip of her appearance on the Billboard New Year’s Eve show at the end of this blog.

Oh, and what was up with the hairstyles Thursday night? Looked like someone had tried to fashion Kris’ hair into a mohawk. Allison had so many red locks hanging in front of her eyes, it’s a wonder she didn’t dance right off the front of the stage.

Now, a look at Idols on the music charts as we head into 2010.

Kris Allen: After jumping five spots on the Billboard 200 last week, Kris’ album heads in the opposite direction this week, dropping from 56 to 59. “Live Like We’re Dying” seems to be running out of steam on the Hot 100, nudging up one spot, from 33 to 32.

David Archuleta: Predictably, with the holiday shopping season coming to and end, David’s Christmas album took a mighty tumble on the Billboard 200, from 55 to 80. But it was still the ninth most popular holiday album in terms of sales.

Kelly Clarkson: “Already Gone” holds its spot at the top of the adult pop singles chart this week. It’s also number nine among Billboard’s pop songs, number 13 on the adult contemporary singles chart and number 28 on the Hot 100. That’s a 10-spot drop from a week ago. The album, “All I Ever Wanted,” is number 144 this week, down from 143.

Daughtry: Chris and the guys advanced on four fronts on this week’s Billboard charts. “No Surprise,” lead single off “Leave This Town,” moves from nine to seven on the adult contemporary chart; “Life After You,” the followup single, advances from 58 to 57 on the Hot 100.

The new album jumped six spots, from 59 to 53, on the Billboard 200; the debut album is back on the charts, moving up from 181 to 173.

Allison Iraheta: Hopefully, 19 Entertainment is going to show patience with Allison, because she has great potential. But, so far, her “Just Like You” album isn’t catching on. In its third week on the charts, it dropped from 148 to 165.

Adam Lambert: For all the hype, Adam still hasn’t gotten a single higher than number 50 on the Hot 100 and his latest, “Whataya Want From Me,” isn’t exactly roaring up the charts. This week, it moves from 72 to 68. The album, “For Your Entertainment,” checks in at number 39 on the Billboard 200 for the second straight week.

Kellie Pickler: Status quo for Kellie as the new year begins. Her album holds at number 32 on the country albums chart; her single, “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You,” checks in at number 23 for the second straight week.

Carrie Underwood: “Play On” drops from five to eight on the Billboard 200, but that makes eight weeks in the top 10, more than any other Idol album of 2009. The new CD is still number two on the country chart, behind Taylor Swift’s “Fearless.”

Of course, that’s hardly Carrie’s only chart mention. Her first two albums are also on the Billboard 200 — “Carnival Ride” up from 164 to 146; “Some Hearts” up from 162 to 156. The “Cowboy Casanova” single is 29 on the Hot 100, a 10-spot jump from last week. “Temporary Home” is number 19 on the country singles chart, a two-spot bump.
