When I spotted the song on my Spotify Release Radar, it jumped out.

After all, it’s not a collaboration you’d expect.

Pop singer Nick Hagelin and country-soul artist Adam Wakefield have teamed up on a new song called “Hourglass.”

Turns out, there’s a story behind that song.

Nick says he and Adam wrote the song when they were colleagues and contestants on The Voice. Nick finished ninth; Adam finished second behind Alisan Porter.

The song was released in conjunction with a fundraiser held late last month for Nick’s son, Bash, who will undergo surgery on both of his legs later this year.

You’ll recall we met Bash when Nick competed on The Voice. The youngster was born with a rare genetic condition called Arthrogryposis that limits the range of motion in his knees and makes walking difficult.

Bash will actually undergo two surgeries — one in last September and one in early October. He’ll be in a wheelchair for two months and will have to re-learn how to walk. But the procedures will also set him up for a life of independence, according to a Go Fund Me page established to help cover medical costs.

The campaign reached its $10,000 goal within five days. So far, more than $16,000 has been donated to that cause.

And the June 23 Hope In Motion benefit concert, held in Atlanta and featuring Nick and Adam, raised another $9,000 toward the cause.

“(Bash) will certainly get the therapy and treatment he needs, and his incredible recovery story will continue to inspire families going through the same thing,” Nick writes on Facebook. “I am grateful beyond words.”

You can check out the Go Fund Me campaign here. And here’s “Hourglass.”

Oh, and Nick and his wife Christina celebrated the birth of their second son, Ace Henry Hagelin, in February.
