Any hope that the Idol judges would wake from their season-long slumber after the ouster of Pia Toscano was shattered midway through Wednesday’s show.
Scotty McCreery had just done what Scotty McCreery does every week. Sing a country song well. Hit all the notes. Look self-assured on stage.
“You know, everybody wants us to be tough with you guys,” Jennifer Lopez said, acknowledging the very legitimate criticism the judges received in the wake of Pia’s demise. “But the truth is, you all are so damn good … All I really want to say is, ‘Wow.'”
And so, for another week, the judges mostly said “wow.” Time and time again.
Fortunately, not everyone is as reluctant to judge the Idol hopefuls as the three judges who are paid millions to do so. (Boy, if feels silly having to type that.)
You can check out my song-by-song grades here and my recap on who should stay and who should go home here.
But since I hardly consider myself an expert on all things musical, I’m providing links below to some other sites where you’ll find real opinions — yes, opinions — about what transpired last night.
First thing you’ll discover: Idol watchers are quite divided over Casey Abrams’ performance.
And one consistent theme: No one can seem to figure out why Haley Reinhart was singled out for criticism on a night when the judges loved everyone else.
Look, it’s not as though Haley’s performance was flawless. It certainly didn’t match her “Piece of My Heart” from last week.
But Scotty seems to sing the same song every week. Jacob Lusk somehow manages to take his incredible vocal skills and turn in an unpleasant performance every week. Forced to perform without his guitar for the first time in a month, Paul McDonald looked lost. Casey Abrams gets points for bravery, but not for a great vocal. And the day Stefano Langone is crowned American Idol is the day I stop referring to this show as anything but Cute Boy Idol.
Take heart, Haley fans.
That little bit of criticism might have convinced supporters of Idol’s females to vote even more fervently for her last night.
At least that’s my hope.
Anyway, here are the links. Happy reading.
