Opening for Kelly Clarkson: rain and Eric Hutchinson

Eric Hutchinson

If you’re heading to what’s promising to be a wet Kelly Clarkson performance at the York Fair tonight, you might want to be familiar with this name as well: Eric Hutchinson.

He’s been opening for Kelly at many of her recent tour dates, including last week in Allentown, and is scheduled to do so again this evening, apparently for a final time based on a check of the tour schedule for the two artists.

Some fast facts:

* Hutchinson released two independent albums before signing a deal with Maverick Records. But the company went under before the album could be released, so he released “Sounds Like This” independently as well in 2007.

* “Sounds Like This” got a boost from a rave review by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. One of the songs on the album, “Rock & Roll,” was included on the soundtrack for “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.”

* With its popularity growing, “Sounds Like This” was re-released by Warner Brothers in May of last year. The songs I’ve heard straddle the line between jazz and pop.

* Hutchinson, who turned 29 last week, has performed his songs on a number of the late-night talk shows. Here’s a link to his June performance of his latest single, “OK, It’s Alright with Me,” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

* You can hear “Rock & Roll,” “OK, It’s Alright with Me” and several of his other songs on Hutchinson’s MySpace page.

* And if you really like what you hear tonight, Hutchinson will be back in the area Monday, Sept. 28, playing at Ram’s Head Live! in Baltimore. Tickets are $15, but the show appears to be free with a college ID. Here’s a link to more info.

* Finally, here’s a link to a recent Allentown Morning Call story that includes an interview with Eric.
