Sunday marked opening night for Syesha Mercado and the new Dreamgirls. The reviews I’ve read are mostly positive.
For those who missed the news, Syesha, the third-place finisher on Idol season seven, landed the role of Deena Jones in the new stage version of Dreamgirls.
The show opened at the Apollo Theater in Harlem as the first stop on a national tour. The second stop is the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore from Dec. 16 to Dec. 27.
I’ve always considered Syesha one of the most consistent and underrated performers on season seven of Idol. And I still think she belonged in the finals alongside David Cook.
All you had to do was watch her perform Peggy Lee’s “Fever” in her last Idol performance show to know she’d be equally comfortable in a stage role.
Here are links to two reviews of the show:
And then there’s this video from a FOX TV station in New York where Syesha and co-stars Moya Angela (Effie) and Adrienne Warren (Lorrell) talk about all the wig and costume changes required of Dreamgirls, who will be performing at the Apollo through Dec. 12.
