Only three contestants were eliminated on the first night of the battle round on The Voice, and two of those were singers who had turned four chairs during the blind audition.
In fact, as many contestants were saved as eliminated on night one. Those getting a second chance on the show include Griffin, picked up by Team Blake; Craig Wayne Boyd, picked up by Team Gwen; and Jean Kelley, picked up by Team Pharrell.
The biggest upset of the night was pulled off by 18-year-old Elyjuh Rene, who bested 36-year-old background singer Maiya Sykes, one of the standout performers from the blind auditions. Philly’s Chris Jamison won a battle of singers who had turned four chairs during the auditions, defeating Jonathan Wyndham.
Other victorious battle round singers on Monday included Sugar Joans and Taylor John Williams of Team Gwen, James David Carter of Team Blake, and Luke Wade of Team Pharrell.
