Rayshun LaMarr accomplished something on Season 14 of The Voice that no other singer had ever done.

On Top 12 results night, he found himself in the bottom two and earned an instant save over D.R. King.

The next week, he turned in such an impressive performance of “Try a Little Tenderness” that he breezed into the Top 10 on fan voting.

And thus he became the first Voice contestant ever to land in the bottom two on Top 12 week and avoid the bottom two the next week.

As it turned out, Rayshun earned another instant save en route to a Top 8 finish on the show.

In the process, he landed in the Top 10 on the iTunes R&B chart three times, in the Top 15 five times and hit number one on that chart with his cover of “Try a Little Tenderness.” And made a mark with his high-energy, joyful performances.

Here’s what LaMarr told Voice Views about his time on the show and his music moving forward.

Voice Views: What’s next for you musically?

Rayshun: I plan on hitting the ground running. I have some show dates lined up on the East Coast and a couple of dates out here in L.A. And I’m planning on continuing the musical theater journey as well.

And I know I want to get a solo album out there. On the show, I pretty much came into my, you know, I found my genre here — my real genre. So I’m ready to start working on writing and getting back into the studio.

voice Views: What was your favorite performance on The Voice and why was it your favorite?

Rayshun: I would say my favorite performance — there’s actually two of them — “Try a Little Tenderness” and “I’m Going Down.”

“I’m Going Down,” I don’t know, I think that was just — I was in the moment. I felt it really hard and I just enjoyed that performance.

And “Try a Little Tenderness,” that was one of my favorite performances also because I feel that’s when I really found myself in the competition. And found who I really wanted to be and that felt really good. nd, you know, America recognized that, so that’s two of my best performances I believe.

Voice Views: Can you talk about something you gained from The Voice experience that’s going to affect you music moving forward?

Rayshun: The thing I would mostly take away from this whole experience is that I’ve learned to just be free and be myself, and to be Rayshun and to be confident, and to just go and do me without worrying about what other people have to think.

So that’s the biggest thing that I take away and the friendships. We’ve gained so many great friends and we’ve bonded so well. It’s like a family and so that’s a really wonderful thing that I take out of this.

Editor’s Note: With a background in musical theater, Rayshun was 34 when he auditioned for The Voice. For more on the singer from Fort Washington, Md., head here. Rayshun’s social media links follow.
