When Season 16 of The Voice began, Kelly Clarkson was desperate to land a country singer.
She wound up convincing Rebecca Howell to join her team.
And Rebecca, who turned three chairs with her blind audition performance of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” wound up advancing all the way to last week’s Top 24 show.
Now Rebecca is planning her debut release. And the young woman from Cochran, Ga. — she was 18 when she auditioned — says it might not be a strictly country project.
Here’s what Rebecca told Voice Views about her new music and her time on the show.
Voice Views: Which was your favorite performance on The Voice and why?
Rebecca: My favorite performance on The Voice was “Any Man of Mine.” I felt the energy of the crowd and it helped me put on a great show. I loved the arrangement and it was all together a fun performance.
Voice Views: Where do you see your time on the show leading you musically? What do you have planned next?
Rebecca: My time on the show has taught me a lot about the industry and helped me to become a stronger and more versatile singer. As for the future, I plan to use this momentum to start gigging and recording music.
Voice Views: Do you think you’ll be releasing new music in the future. If so, what can you tell me about that? And, what can fans expect in terms of sound/timing?
Rebecca: The goal is to release an EP by the end of this year. You can expect there to be some country roots with a mix of soul, rock and roll, and maybe even some pop.
Voice Views: Do you think you grew as an artist as a result of The Voice experience? If so, in what way?
Rebecca: I learned so much vocally from the coaches as well as the other contestants. I can honestly say I’ve improved so much as a singer during the short time I was on the show. I also learned a lot of important information about the industry.
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience on the show?
Rebecca: During my time on the show, I made amazing and life long friends. Everyone who is affiliated with the show, whether it be an employee or contestant, is so nice and supportive. I’m truly blessed to have met them.
