Pharrell Williams pitted two singers who grew up with Motown music against one another in the battle round.

That mean Ricky Manning, 19, of Cape Coral, Fla., went up against Brittany Butler, 21, of Boston, Mass. They were asked to sing “On Broadway” by George Benson.

Brittany brought her jazzy influences to the song. But Ricky, who voiced the need to loosen up during rehearsals, did that and more during a performance that was solid from the first note.

Pharrell declared Ricky the winner, praising him for the improvement he’d shown. He now advances to the knockout round. Brittany did not get stolen.
