Royce Lovett told The Voice he grew up in the sticks of Tallahassee, Fla., “singing and rapping to the wind.”

This week found him on national television, playing guitar and singing Wyclef Jean’s “911” in front of The Voice’s four superstar coaches.

His performance wound up prompting chair turns from Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton.

And Royce, who has already released three EPs, opted to join Team Gwen for Season 17.

Here’s what Royce, 30, told Voice Views about his blind audition.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 17 and what prompted you to do it?

Royce: I got an invitation to come audition a few years in a row and always deleted it and thought it was a scam. This year my wife opened it and said, “BOY you better do this!” Lol. My wife has always encouraged me in each milestone for my career.

Voice Views: Why did you choose “911” for your audition song?

Royce: I’ve been a fan of Wyclef and this song for many years. I thought it would embrace the tone and strength of my voice, and also be a lot of fun! I don’t consider myself a reggae artist but I enjoy fusing different sounds together. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as Gwen and I did 🙌.

Voice Views: Why did you decide to join Team Gwen? And did you have a preference for a coach heading into the blind audition?

Royce: I knew that if Gwen turned, I would be Gwen all the way! Gwen is my kind-of artist; she can play any style or genre and bring people together. That’s what I want to do!
