Samuel Harness was just two lines into his blind audition performance of 3 Doors Down “Here Without You” when John Legend turned his chair.

And by the time the 26-year-old from Fort Wayne, Indiana, had finished singing, three of The Voice’s four superstar coaches were facing in his direction.

Ariana Grande and Blake Shelton made impassioned pitches to lure Samuel to their teams.

But he opted to join Team Legend. He talks about his blind audition experience below.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for Season 21 of The Voice?

Samuel: I have always been told at my gigs that I should audition for the show but didn’t think much of it. Then, honestly, out of nowhere I received an email with an invite to audition and interview in 2020. Fast forward to now and I’m on the show! It’s an incredible journey that requires lots of hard work.

Voice Views: Why performed “Here Without You” for your audition song? What do you think made that a good song choice for your audition and is it one you’ve performed often?

Samuel: The song is about missing someone you love and while being thousands of miles away from my 4 year old son, (Asher) it felt like a song that really resonated with me in that moment. It’s also a 2000’s classic, which is also pure nostalgia for everyone.

Voice Views: How would you describe that blind audition experience? Especially having three coaches turn so quickly.

Samuel: Truly, the only way to describe my experience with a 3 chair turn for my audition is SURREAL. I’ve worked very hard on my craft for years and it felt amazing to get the recognition from such amazing coaches.

Voice Views: And why did you decide to join Team Legend?

Samuel: Honestly, the reason I chose John to be my coach is because he is a versatile artist who has an appreciation for unique voices like mine. It just felt right, ya know?
