Season 10, Tim Halperin

Song of the Day: Tim Halperin’s ‘She Runs’

4

Tim Halperin was featured in the Los Angeles episode of American Idol. Editor’s Note: See update below.

Today’s featured song comes from an Idol contestant who provided one of the few bright spots during that dreadful Los Angeles episode.

Meet Tim Halperin, 23, of Fort Worth, Texas, one of Idol’s MySpace auditioners.

While Tim was explaining his crush on Jennifer Lopez in that L.A. show, Idol’s blue bar was identifying his occupation as advertising.

But he’s been singing for a while. In his Idol video, he says he participated in show choir back in middle school. On Facebook, he indicates his music career started when he began writing his own songs as a student at Texas Christian University.

He’s a piano singer-songwriter, and thinks that might help set him apart from the guitar-playing crowd. To me, he sounds better than Matt Giraud or Scott MacIntyre, two of the higher profile piano-playing songwriters we’ve met on Idol.

“I’m the next American Idol because I’ve had to work at the music thing,” Tim says in his Idol video. “I’ve tried doing the singer-songwriter thing. I know the hard work involved.”

Hmm … hey, Tim. According to your Facebook bio, last year you went on something called the “Tim Halperin Sorority Tour.”

That’s hard work?

Joking aside, here’s my favorite among the Tim Halperin tunes I’ve heard so far.

It’s called “She Runs,” and it’s performed to a humorous little video.

Best of all, it’s available free of charge as a podcast on iTunes (that’s the song, not the video).

Enjoy, and for more music from Tim, go here.

Update: Tim, of course, was eliminated from Idol in the semifinals. In addition to “She Runs,” a cover of “Party in the USA” is available from iTunes as a free podcast download. Tim also recorded a song called “We Fight Back” that is available for download from several sites, but not iTunes. The tune was recorded for Susan G. Komen For the Cure; part of the proceeds from each download goes to fight breast cancer. In a radio interview you can also hear on iTunes, Tim admits that song is different than most he has recorded. “It’s got some autotone on my voice and a whole lot of candy on my music.” I’ve also embedded a video of it below.

Editor’s Note: Previous songs of the days from this year’s Idol contestants —“Icing” by Charity Vance;  “Dreamin’ Alone” by Paul McDonald of the Hightide Blues/Grand Magnolias.  Charity has been eliminated; just call it Idol’s folly. Paul’s still around, but barely seen. More Idol folly.

Now, “We Fight Back”
