The Billboard charts released Thursday didn’t exactly bring scintillating news for David Cook and his fans.
The second post-Idol album from the season seven winner of American Idol debuted at number seven with sales of about 46,000 copies.
That put “This Loud Morning” behind new music from Beyonce, Selena Gomez and Big Sean. And behind the hit albums by Adele and Jason Aldean.
And that put it well behind the pace of his first post-Idol album, which entered the Billboard 200 at number three and sold 280,000 copies in its first week.
Now, comparing album sales from today to those from more than two years ago is tricky business, because albums sales have declined overall.
But there are other signs that indicate David’s sprint to platinum status might be way more difficult this time around.
“The Last Goodbye was the lead single and clearly the most hook-friendly track on the album; it has yet to crack the Hot 100 despite being released in mid-April.
The five albums mentioned above were all still in the top 10 on the iTunes album download chart this morning. “This Loud Morning” has plummeted to 67.
And “This Loud Morning” hasn’t exactly been embraced by critics.
David, predictably, sounds great on the album and has delivered some fine songs. “Goodbye to the Girl,” “Paper Heart” and “We Believe” spring instantly to mind.
But some of the criticism is merited. “This Loud Morning” is an album is desperate need of three or four tracks that offer a chance of pace. A couple raucous rockers to help the album live up to its title. Or a ballad that remains a ballad from start to finish.
Instead, every track works up to a bombastic chorus. Even the bonus tracks.
The result: An album that opens brilliantly with unexpected chimes on the first track quickly runs out of surprises of a grander scale.

It irritates me so much that someone like David, who can sing anything and make it sound amazing, puts on a heartfelt and emotional live show that more than entertains, who has put his heart and soul into making this album is so underrated in the music industry. In a world full of industry made, auto-tuned artists who in reality can’t carry a tune and whose performances are so overwrought with lights, and half-naked women (and men) prancing around the stage that you can’t even hear the person singing, even if they could sing, it’s a shame that someone like David and others with true talent are overlooked. Success should not be limited to only those singers who have a song played every 30 mins on “mainstream” radio. There are people out there, like me, who want mature music, without lyrics that refer to drugs, drinking, sex and violence. David will probably never have “Bieber” level succes, despite his musical abilities, but he has very loyal fans who will, as long as he makes music, keep buying and listening.
How about some of the good reviews like People Magazine or MTV or do you just like reporting the negative?
Give me the link to any other review that includes a rating — stars, grades, whatever — and I’ll include it.

David Cook is an amazingly talented artist. He can sing ANYTHING! I think there are several reasons why his album sales are slow. First, it took way too long for his newest album to be released. What is that saying…. “Out of sight. Out if mind.”. I’m a HUGE fan of David’s, but to tell you the truth, I’ve been waiting and waiting for his new album to come out and when I heard bits of it, I wasn’t as impressed with the album as I thought I would have been. I’m going to buy his album anyways, cause I love him and want to support him I’m any way possible… There was a teaser video released Some time ago just giving his fans a taste of his new album. I thought it was a bit deceiving :(. Sadly to say… I got the vibe that his new album would have a slightly different edge to his style if music. The sound and beats were awesome. I was trilled to hear the entire song! But when I did…. It just sounded like his other songs. You need a sound that catches the audience and just that little itty bitty part of that song was good and different. I’m not sure if it’s his management team is directing a lot of the decision making of his songs. Cause I know there’s more to his talent then what I’m hearing on this album. His very first album Analog Heart was AMAZING! He made it himself and I have to say that I my favorite album of his. :D. So I know he can write and create awesome music. So it may be his management team that is stunting this amazing artist from really soaring :(. I still LOVE david and always will…. This is just my opinion of what I think is happening.
David needs to go Indi where he will be able to put out an album the way he wants to and not be held down by the suits. He would not only be in charge of his own career, but he would make LOADS more money being responsible for his own career. The suits care only about themselves and not much about their artists.
The music reviews in US Magazine and EW were extremely lazy and in fact the EW review was actually not even factually correct so it was hard to take them seriously. Plus, when I look for music reviews I don’t look to EW or US Magazine. Here are some other reviews/articles that you could post links for:

You’re the cutest thing that ever hit the Idol stage. I love your music!
The new CD is a little sad,I hope you’re not sad about anything! That would worry me.
The best singer to come along in years! I know you love ROCK, I wish you would sing some soft music so we can hear that side of you.
I don’t know why, but if anyone says anything derogatory about you, I just can’t stand it! Truly gifted, Sue
