‘Stronger’ rules the music charts; Idol albums do not

2

Kelly Clarkson’s smash single “Stronger” continues to be the bright spot on the Billboard music charts among former Idols.

The song is at the top of three charts this week — pop, radio and adult pop. For those who are counting, that means the song has reached number one on six different charts. Give it time and it’s likely to top the adult contemporary chart as well.

And you’ll want to watch for Kelly’s name on the county singles chart in the coming weeks. Not content to rule the pop charts, the original Idol just released a country version of “Mr. Know It All,” the first hit off her current album. It’s now available on iTunes.

Unfortunately, Idol albums aren’t doing as well on the charts as Kelly’s single.

Check it out:

* Ruben Studdard’s fifth album, “Letters from Birmingham,” dropped out of the Billboard 200 after just two weeks. It’s also dropped out of the top 40 on the R&B album chart.

* Clay Aiken’s starting on “Celebrity Apprentice.” But the album released to capitalize on the TV show was greeted with a giant yawn. “Steadfast” — essentially a re-packaging of his 2010 “Tried and True” disc — debuted at number 120 on the Billboard 200.

* Casey James’ debut album landed at number two on the country album chart and 23 on the Billboard 200 last week. This week, it drops to 15 and 78, respectively. One bit of good news for Casey, his “Let’s Not Call It a Night” single reached a new high of 21 on the country singles chart.
