Tate Brusa was nearly through his blind audition cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” on The Voice Season 18.

And none of the coaches had turned.

But Nick Jonas would later say he heard “fight” in Tate’s voice, and that’s what he did next, delivering a big note that prompted chair turns from Nick and Blake Shelton.

Tate had earned a spot on The Voice and got the bonus of an on-stage tutoring session from Nick Jonas a few moments later.

Here’s what the 16-year-old from Salt Lake City told Voice Views about the blind audition experience and his decision to join Team Nick.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 18 and what prompted you to do it, especially at such a young age? Had you ever tried a show like this in the past?

Tate: I decided to take up the casting crew on their offer to have a private audition in Boise, Idaho. I grew up watching The Voice so it was a no-brainer for me when I got the call! I’ve never auditioned for any show before, so this was a first-time experience and I’ve loved every minute of it! I’m so grateful for the opportunity Nick Jonas and The Voice has given me to share my voice with the world.

Voice Views: Why did you choose “Perfect” for your audition song? What’s your performance history with that song (for instance, is it one you’ve played often)?

Tate: I chose the song Perfect because it’s one of Ed Sheeran’s best songs. He connects to the lyrics so well, I knew I had to give it a go and yes, I’ve played it before.

Voice Views: Did you have a coaching preference heading into the blind audition? Why did you decide to go with Nick Jonas as your coach?

Tate: I knew I wanted to go with Nick as a coach if I had the option. I love the Jonas brothers and have sung their songs growing up. Nick is a tremendous singer and seemed like a super fun person to be around, so that’s why I wanted to select him. I imagined Nick and I would be a good fit because he grew up in the music industry. Nick’s experiences as a young artist could benefit me.

Voice Views: And what was that blind audition experience like? Especially having Nick come up and join you on stage?

Tate: The blind audition was nerve wracking to say the least, but once they turned around I felt a massive sigh of relief! When Nick joined me on stage and played my guitar, it felt like I was dreaming. I will never forget the moment for as long as I live!
