Tessanne’s coronation song hits the iTunes charts

The Voice has taken another page from the American Idol script.

On last night’s Season 5 finale, Tessanne Chin capped her celebration by singing a coronation single.

Penned by Ryan Tedder of One Republic, the tune is called “Tumbling Down.”

From what I can remember, this is the first time The Voice has tried a coronation single for a winner.

The Voice had Tedder write the single without knowing who would win The Voice.

That’s something that always bothered me when Idol used the same ploy. I mean, a song that fits Tessanne Chin might not be a good fit for Jacquie Lee or Will Champlin.

But taking a none-to-subtle shot at some of Idol’s coronation flops of the past, Tedder said during last broadcast that he wanted to write a song everyone could relate to rather than a celebratory tune. (Remember that “No Boundaries” crap Adam Lambert and Kris Allen were forced to perform back in Season 8?)

Anyway, so we have “Tumbling Down,” which you can rush over to iTunes and download right now.

Only folks aren’t flocking to iTunes quite as quickly as they did after Monday’s episode, when downloading a Tessanne tune also resulted in a vote for their favorite contestant.

As of 11:30 a.m., “Tumbling Down” was sitting at 54 on the iTunes singles chart, just four spots higher than Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope’s “Wasting All These Tears,” released months ago.

Tessanne’s three songs from Monday’s show were both charting higher than “Tumbling Down.” “I Have Nothing” was still at number three; her “Let It Be” duet with Adam Levine was at number seven.

Even her version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was stationed at number 36 on the Top 200 singles chart, 18 spots higher than the new single.

So, I guess you could say the jury is still out on how well The Voice will do with coronation singles.

Oh, and you can also head to iTunes to download Tessanne’s upcoming album — 10 tracks promised for $9.99 — with an instant download of “Tumbling Down.”

As of 11:30 a.m., that album was at 120 on iTunes Top 200 albums chart. A collection of Season 5 songs performed by Tessanne was doing much better, at number 18.
