Who goes home tonight on American Idol?
My prediction last night was Kristen O’Connor, and I still think she’s the contestant with the most to be nervous about tonight.
I didn’t think her vocal was anywhere near the worst on Wednesday. If you want names, those who left me not wanting to hear them sing again included at least M.K. Nobilette, Dexter Roberts and Malaya Watson.
But Kristen was forced to sing early in the show, wasn’t particularly memorable and needed a wild card berth to make it this far.
Of course, this results show will last an hour, which means we’ll be treated to musical performances. This week’s guest performances will come from Candice Glover and Jake Bugg.
Speaking of Candice, her debut album landed on Billboard with a ripple rather than a splash earlier today. To find out how dismal the sales figures were, head here.
And we begin with the obligatory group number as the contestants leave the dressing room. And they end up on stage singing “Radioactive.”
Results already:
Malaya Watson, Jenan Irene, Ben Briley and Alex Preston have been summoned to the stage.
Randy’s take: Malaya didn’t calm down enough to give a solid performance. Jena did well. Randy loved the subtle performance by Alex. Ben’s version of “Folsom Prison Blues” might have been a bit fast, but he liked the fact that he gave a twist to the song.
The outcome: Ben, Alex and Jena are safe. Malaya is in the bottom three. Good job, voters. The best part of that: Jena didn’t land in the bottom three after needing a wild card spot. To me, she’s a potential winner.
Musical interlude: Candice, singing “Cried” and “Some Kind of Man.”
M.K. Nobilette, Sam Woolf, Majesty Rose and Dexter Roberts are next to the stage.
Randy’s take: Sam has to overcome his shyness, Randy says. Majesty was fantastic. He says Dexter didn’t give his best performance, but he thinks it was good enough to survive the week. He said M.K. is improving as a performer.
Outcome: Dexter is safe. So is Majesty. So is Sam. That leaves M.K. in the bottom three.
Musical interlude: Someone named Jake Bugg is going to sing. Not sure I get this, but Idol is going to showcase young talent on results show. As in young talent who didn’t go through the show’s process. Huh?
Results: Kristen O’Connor, Caleb Johnson, Jess Meuse, Emily Piriz and C.J. Harris get their results next.
Randy’s take: He says Kristen did pretty well, but didn’t quite put the emotion into the song he had hoped. Emily didn’t put quite the edge on the Pink song she could have. Caleb is the resident rocker and performed well. He also loved the performance by Jess. Randy says C.J. needs more consistency and needs to shake off his nerves.
So, we have M.K., Malaya and Kristen in danger of elimination. The contestant who deserves to go home is Malaya.
And the contestant in danger of heading home is not M.K.; she’s safe.
And the contestant in danger of heading home is Kristen.
Kristen is singing “Turning Tables.” And there is absolutely no chance that the judges will use the save at this point. And, truthfully, Kristen isn’t turning in a performance worthy of being saved, though she finished with a flourish.
The save won’t be used, and Kristen O’Connor is going home.
Check back tomorrow for an exit interview with Kristen.
