Adam Levine used to be known as the king of the four-chair turn on The Voice.

If an artist turned all four chairs during his or her blind audition, Adam usually managed to reel them in.

But that’s not why DeAndre Nico joined Team Adam earlier this week after becoming just the second artist of Season 15 to earn a four-chair turn.

He was simply keeping a promise to himself.

“I made a vow to myself whoever had turned around first, that’s what I was going to choose,” DeAndre, 23, of Beaumont, Texas, said during a conference call with the media the day after his blind audition aired. “I stuck to my word. You know, I’m a man of my word.”

DeAndre got all The Voice coaches to turn around with his cover of Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.”

“That was a big goal of mine, and I prayed and, you know, that’s what I wanted,” he said during the conference call. “But when it happened, that was amazing. That was a tremendous feeling. Everything was just, wow, I was speechless.”

The coaches certainly weren’t. They all lobbied DeAndre to join their respective teams, with Jennifer Hudson perhaps putting up the biggest fight.

But it was Adam proclaimed DeAndre’s voice “amazing” and vowed that he can take the young man all the way on The Voice.

The blind auditions were filmed in June, meaning DeAndre’s already gotten to work with Adam.

“Adam’s a great guy,” he said. “He’s really cool. He’s really down to earth. He tells us what we need to hear, He just lets us know what’s up, ‘Hey, that sounds bad,’ you know.

“He tries to help us in every area that he can. He’s trying to win, just like us.”

The Voice blind auditions resume Monday night on NBC. We’ll see DeAndre again in the battle round, which begins airing Oct. 15.
