The Voice will name its five Season 20 finalists tonight.

To review, the top vote-getter from each team will advance.

Then all five contestants still at risk will sing for an instant save.

I far preferred when The Voice advanced the top vote-getters to the finals, regardless of teams.

Yep, that generated several seasons when Blake was represented by more than one finalists. That generated several seasons in which coaches were left without finalists.

So what? This is supposed to be about the singers, not the coaches (yeah, I know, even typing that is a joke when we’re talking about The Voice).

But given that each team is guaranteed a finalists, my choices to advance would be Victor Solomon for Team Legend, Kenzie Wheeler for Team Kelly, Cam Anthony for Team Blake and Rachel Mac for Team Nick. If that happened, I’d then be rooting for Dana Monique to win the instant save.

And Carson Daly’s wasting no time getting to the results. Another suggested format change for The Voice: Get rid of these silly questions.

Advancing to the finale:

Team Kelly — Kenzie Wheeler: He and Cam were the only contestants to crack the Top 200 on Apple Music today.
Team Legend — Victor Solomon: He deserved the spot based on a series of solid performances. He’s shown quite the stage presence too.
Team Nick — Rachel Mac: As talented as Dana is, I can’t be too upset with that result. Rachel is just unbelievably easy to root for.
Team Blake — Cam Anthony: Well deserved. He had the best performance last night. And he and Kenzie should be the favorites heading into next week.

The save:

Pia Renee (Team Legend), “Everything I Wanted”: Solid performance from Pia, but probably not the “moment” she needed to land the save. She hit a wonky note in the middle of the song, but served up a wonderful ending. Grade: B

Corey Ward (Team Kelly), “Iris”: Corey served up a much better vocal tonight than last night. That was a worthy save performance. But, remember, he won last week’s instant save, so the odds aren’t great. But that was a great performance. Grade: A–

Dana Monique (Team Nick), “Caught Up in Rapture”: Dana has a nice voice, but this is not what she does best. What she does best is storm the stage with energy and passion on up-tempo songs. Odd that she didn’t choose one here. Grade: B–

Jordan Matthew Young (Team Blake), “Drift Away”: Hey, don’t count Jordan out of this. That was much better than his performance last week. It was spot-on and is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Grade: B+

Gihanna Zoe (Team Kelly), “Someone You Love”: Like Jordan and Corey, Gihanna sounded much, much better tonight than last night. Her voice sounded really sweet on that cover. And she hit some impressive glory notes too. Nice job. Grade: A–

And winning the instant save is: Jordan Matthew Young.

No the least bit surprised.

And, remember, Gihanna Zoe is from Cali. And West Coast contestants very rarely win instant saves on The Voice.
