And though the block robs contestants of a coaching option, Zaxai, its latest victim, seems to have adopted the attitude of the previous three.
He considers the block more of a compliment than a hindrance.
The Voice introduced the block in Season 14. A coach can use it to block an opposing coach from landing an artist and in the process improve their odds of snagging that singer for their own team.
But each coach only gets one block per season.
In the case of Zaxai, Jennifer Hudson used her block against Kelly Clarkson during his rendition of “Come and Get Your Love.”
And it worked to perfection. Since they were the only coaches to turn, Zaxai automatically became a member of Team JHUD.
“Honestly, I didn’t even know what happened til like maybe halfway into the song,” Zaxai said during a conference call with the media. “I guess when everything kind of hit me, I was pretty much just ecstatic and thankful that they turned around.
“But the fact that JHud used her only block, I mean it felt kind of good,” the 29-year-old from Brooklyn added. “So special because she could have used that with the plethora of artists that you clearly see on the Season 15 roster. And when I say the Season 15 roster’s amazing, it’s amazing.
“So the fact that she did that, shows that I’m doing something right, that she sees something good in me and I’m just thankful for that.”
As for his experience working with Jennifer? After all, the blind auditions were taped months ago.
“Oh, she’s a riot and she’s a true musician,” Zaxai said. “I love working with her. She’s a sweetheart. She just knows what to do, like little ideas.
“She means what she says by when she calls somebody, you know, JHud Productions, working to the last minute, working to the bone. She’s awesome and I appreciate that because that’s just what I’ve instilled in myself.”
We’ll next see Zaxai during the battle round on The Voice. The blind auditions conclude Monday on NBC.
