The Voice introduced us to nine more members of its Season 20 cast Monday night.
Blake scored the night’s only four-chair turn in country singer Avery Roberson, and that could wind up being a successful combination in Season 20.
But Avery was far from the only singer who impressed Monday.
Here’s are Voice Views’ picks for the best three performances of the night, followed by a recap of all the rest as well.
And picking the Top 3 wasn’t easy.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Jose Figueroa Jr., 34, Kissimmee, Fla.
Audition song: “In This Moment” by Billy and the Beaters
Chair turns: A pitch-perfect opening prompted a quick chair turn from John. Jose delivered an impressive vocal throughout, but wasn’t until near the end of the performance when Nick turned as well.
Feedback: John said it sounded like a four-chair turn performance. Nick called him a phenomenal singer and someone who could make a big impact on the competition. John complimented his dynamics and range.
His choice: Jose opted to join Team Nick, saying he thinks he’s the coach who can help him expand his range as an artist.
Why: Jose delivered flat-out the most impressive vocal of the evening, one that got stronger and stronger as the song went on. He also showed off he knows how to handle himself on a big stage.
RUNNERS-UP
The artist: Avery Roberson, 20, Rutherford, N.C.
Audition song: “If You’re Reading This” by Tim McGraw
Chair turns: John Legend and Kelly Clarkson turned a few lines into the performance. Blake Shelton followed. Nick Jonas made it a four-chair turn in the closing seconds of Avery’s performance.
Feedback: Kelly called his performance “so beautiful and intimate” and his tone “incredible.” John said he turned for a “beautiful voice.” Blake pitched his country credentials and said his knowledge of country music make him the best coach to guide Avery through the competition.
His choice: Avery opted to join Team Blake.
Why: A good-looking guy with a nice deep country voice. That song choice. And Blake Shelton as a coach. Yep, that could be a winning combination in Season 19.
Ryleigh Modig, 18, Spencer, Mass.
Audition song: “when the party’s over” by Billie Eilish
Chair turns: A nice run early in the song prompted a chair turn from Kelly. She was later joined by Nick Jonas.
Feedback: Nick said she has a tone and voice that speaks to his soul. Which depressed Kelly. Until Ryleigh shouted out: “Kelly, I’m gay.” Kelly loved the way Ryleigh got lost in the performance and said it should have been a four-chair turn.
Her choice: Ryleigh joined Team Kelly.
Why: I loved this performance. The runs were tastefully done. I have no idea what the other coaches were thinking. Also loved Ryleigh’s spunky attitude.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
Pia Renee, 37, Chicago, Ill.
Audition song: “Master Blaster” by Stevie Wonder
Chair turns: Pia went most of the performance with no chair turns. But she delivered a series of big notes a the end, prompting chair turns from Blake Shelton and John Legend.
Feedback: John said American needs to hear someone like her, who delivers music with so much soul and heart. He also called her voice so interesting.
Her choice: Pia joined Team John.
Andrew Marshall, 21, Boxford, Mass.
Audition song: “Gravity” by John Mayer
Chair turns: Andrew was barely two lines into the song when Nick turned around. Despite an impressive vocal, Nick wound up being the only coach to turn around.
Feedback: Kelly complimented him on a great tone. Nick complimented his voice too, and noticed that the faces of the show’s viral fans lit up when he took the stage.
His choice: Andrew automatically became Team Nick, but said he’d been dreaming of being a Jonas Brother since age 10.
Emma Caroline, 25, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Audition song: “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves
Chair turns: Hoping to land a female country artist, Blake turned early in the performance. Kelly joined him midway through the audition.
Feedback: Kelly reminded Emma that she’s won the show with a female country artist. Blake said Emma brings something The Voice doesn’t get often, a mountain-sounding country voice.
Her choice: She decided to join Team Blake.
Ciana Pelekai, 20, Las Vegas, Nev.
Audition song: “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I
Chair turns: An excellent opening prompted a quick chair turn from John Legend. A big glory note got Nick to join him. But John blocked Nick, who didn’t realize it until the performance ended.
Feedback: Nick said he was devastated not to have a chance to land Ciana for his team. John said he was “thoroughly impressed” by her performance. He complimented her on a cool tone, excellent range on on her charisma.
Her choice: Thanks to John’s block, Ciana automatically became Team John.
Halley Greg, 29, Seattle, Wash.
Audition song: “I’m Like a Bird”
Chair turns: Kelly turned early in the performance. In spite of a very nice, emotional ending, no one else turned, leaving Kelly in a celebratory mood.
Feedback: Kelly complimented Halley on a pure, intimate and beautiful voice and said her colleagues “missed it.” John called her performance “beautifully crafted.”
Her choice: Halley automatically became Team Kelly.
Durell Anthony, 34, San Diego, Calif.
Audition song: “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye
Chair turns: Durrell started off with an impressive high note that prompted an immediate chair turn from John Legend. Near the end of the performance, Kelly turned as well.
Feedback: Kelly and John both complimented his range. Kelly said Durrell came across as a singer-songwriter. John called it a “special version” of the Marvin Gaye hit.
His choice: Durrell opted to join Team John.
