Former Voice contestant Sheena Brook says she feels “lucky to be alive” after Hurricane Ian.

Sheena, who appeared on Season 12, makes her living as a musician, is based in Fort Myers, Fla., and plays most of her shows in the area.

The very area that took a direct hit from Ian.

At one point, “the water level from the storm surge was about a foot from my roof and, at that point, we had to go hide in a 3rd floor closet of the house next door and pray the roof didn’t come off,” recounts Sheena, referring to herself, her wife Summer Stockton and Summer’s parents.

“At one point, we all thought we might not make it between the gas leak, the surge, and the massive boat slamming into the house,” she adds in an Instagram post from this morning.

But while, Sheena and her family survived the hurricane “all of our things and our home did not. We hope we can find our way through the debris with a truck to try and salvage some clothes at least.

“I don’t know where we go from here,” she writes. “Our island is forever changed; so much of it is gone.”

The Instagram post is accompanied by a series of heart-wrenching videos surveying the storm damage. You can check out that and her full account of the storm here. Sheena had also posted video Tuesday as the storm made landfall.

The tragic turn comes at the tail end of what had been a glorious month for Sheena. She recently released her second recent single, the wonderfully catchy “Piece for Me.”

And her social media had been filled with celebratory posts from th4e Island Hopper Songwriter Fest. This year, Sheena and country singer Brooke Eden co-hosted the first LGBTQ songwriters round in the event’s seven-year history.

One bright note: Musician Megan Linville Myrick has set up a Go Fund Me to support Sheena and her family.

Created Wednesday night, the effort has already raised more than $10,000.
