Breanna Nix of American Idol Season 23

American Idol returns Sunday, March 9 with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie returning as judges. They’ll be joined by Carrie Underwood, who replaces Katy Perry.

Here’s more about Breanna.

* She’s a Christian singer blessed with a powerful voice and a soulful tone.

* She’s also a wife, having been married to her piano-playing husband for five years. They have a young son.

* But lots of Breanna’s social media posts focus on fitness and her weight loss journey — a journey that’s seen her lose 100 pounds.

* “What drove me was how much I hated myself,” Breanna says in an Instagram post named “Why?” and including photos of her when she weighed 300 pounds. “I remember walking up a flight of steps at my apartment and feeling like I was going to have an asthma attack. My most leading factor to why I started my weight loss journey was how miserable I felt, how miserable I was, how miserable I looked.”

* She posted the video last July, two and a half years after deciding she was going to lose weight. At the time, she said she still hasn’t quite reached her weight loss goal. “I have to work a little harder than most people to be healthy and to be the mom I’m supposed to be and the wife I’m supposed to be, and that’s what drives me.”

* But she’s now trying to help others do the same as a health coach through NixFitness, offering everything from one-on-one coaching to free grocery swap suggestions.

* In terms of music, her Instagram is loaded with impressive covers of Christian songs, usually with her husband seated beside her, playing piano.

* Breanna has more than 2,500 followers and more than 17,000 likes on her TikTok.

* Her most popular covers there are “Beautiful Star” and a truly impassioned version of Katy Nichole’s “In Jesus Name.” Both have more than 50,000 views. Check out the latter below.

* American Idol has released a short snippet of Breanna’s audition, performed while her young son sits on Carrie Underwood’s lap. It apparently goes well, earning Breanna a hug from Carrie.
