Season 7 American Idol winner David Cook completed his first marathon Sunday in Los Angeles.

Those who have followed David won’t be surprised to learn he did so to benefit a good cause.

David ran in the Honda L.A. Marathon — all 26.2 miles — to raise money for ABC2, short for Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure.

It’s the same organization he raises money for each year by participating in the 5K Race for Hope in Washington, D.C.

Based on the donor page at crowdrise.com/davidcook, it appears the rocker raised more than $72,000 through sponsors by participating in the marathon.

You say you didn’t get a chance to help out, but would like to?

Well, David is running in the Race for Hope again this year. The event is set for May 6, and there’s still plenty of time to make a pledge on behalf of the David Cook Team for a Cure.

As of noon Monday, more than $28,600 had been pledged to David’s team. That puts the Team for a Cure second in fundraising, but just $470 behind a team known as Kisses4Kayla.

David’s team has led in Race for Hope fundraising each of the three years he’s participated in the event. Last year, his team raised more than $160,000 through the event.

He got involved, of course, because of his older brother, who died as a result of a brain tumor in May 2009, the day before David participated in his first Race for Hope.

David sent out a couple of tweets during Sunday’s marathon.

“Fun stat: by mile 24, I’ve heard “chariots of fire” 13 times,” he wrote.

And, then, once he had completed the marathon: “Marathon: Done. Thanks everyone for supporting ABC2 and me like you did and do. Up next: rest. rest. rest.”
