Group numbers returning to Idol on Top 5 tonight

Looks like group songs are back on American Idol tonight.

The show released a twit pic of the set list for Wednesday’s Top 5 performance show.

Under a section called “duets/trios,” two songs are listed — “Higher and Higher” by Jackie Wilson and “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” by The Righteous Brothers.

Now I’m not a big fan of group numbers on performance shows.

Especially when Idol has Skylar Laine and Colton Dixon sing a country song, then Ryan turns to the judges and asks who did best.

There was just something inherently unfair with that scenario.

On the other hand, if Idol must have a two-hour performance show every week, I’d rather the show fill it with music rather than filler crap, like a visit to the offices of TMZ.

Oh, if you’re curious, the rest of the set list is chock full of songs we’ve heard on Idol before.

Among the 1960s British pop selections:   “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,”  “The Letter,”  “Proud Mary,”  “Fortunate Son” and “River Deep, Mountain High.”

Among the British pop selections:  “To Love Somebody,”  “Time of the Season,”   “Bleeding Love,”   “You Are So Beautiful,”  and “You Don’t Have to Love Me.”

Check back at 8 p.m.   I’ll be live blogging throughout the show and provided song-by-song grades after each performance.
