Jake Worthington tried out for Season 5 of The Voice and couldn’t turn a single chair with his cover of the upbeat tune, “Keep Your Hands to Yourself.”
So he admits he was a little reluctant when The Voice asked if he’d like to try again in Season 6.
But friends and family convinced him he’d be foolish to turn down the opportunity. And this time things were different. Very, very different.
He sang a slower tune, Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” Adam Levine turned around early in the performance, quickly followed by Blake Shelton and Shakira.
Jake joined Team Blake, and now the two country charmers are one performance show away from potentially claiming the Season 6 Voice crown.
Want a sample of Jake’s charm and dry sense of humor? In his latest Voice video, he talks about getting to meet Blake’s family, including wife and country music star Miranda Lambert.
“I never thought she’d want to meet me,” he says. “She gave me a hug. I gave her a hug. Speechless. After a couple hours of rehabilitation I got back down to my senses (and thought), ‘Miranda Lambert sitting there. Play it cool.'”
Jake, 18, from LaPorte, Texas, is the least experienced of the Season 6 Top 3. Still a senior in high school, he was in a band with four of his friends. But the only Jake Worthington music you’ll find on iTunes are his covers from The Voice.
As for Jake trivia, there’s this tidbit, courtesy of his hometown newspaper, The Houston Chronicle. The guy who wears a cowboy hat for every performance says his favorite concert ever was an AC/DC show a couple of years back.
You can check out all of Jake’s solo performances from Season 6 below. I’ve also noted where each song landed on the iTunes singles chart and the Voice Views grade it received the night of the performance.
Check back Monday night. I’ll be blogging live as always and grading each performance as it occurs.
