Anna Catherine DeHart certainly wasn’t complaining about the song Blake Shelton selected for her and Kristi Hoopes in the battle round on The Voice.

“I love the song we were given,” she told Voice Views. “I always said that if I ever did a competition like this, that I wanted to do this song.”

The song was the celebratory “Independence Day” by Martina McBride.

And it certainly gave Anna Catherine something to celebrate about. She was named the winner, meaning she advanced to the battle round with Team Blake.

Fans of the show didn’t get to see the performance. It was montaged, but Anna Catherine said the coaches seemed to enjoy it.

“The coaches all said that it was a true battle. I think that Kristi and I both put up a good fight and sang our tails off. At the end of the day, I think it all just really depends on what Blake is looking for, for his team. I think we both did our best, and it really showed.”

Not that the song wasn’t a challenge, even as much as Anna Catherine was hoping to sing it.

“I mean, it’s Martina McBride so that within itself is a challenge. She’s got a monster of a voice, and it’s hard to live up to that and do her song justice.

“There are these extremely high notes that we had to work out, and I think that it really pushed me out of my comfort zone. Which is something I always look for in a song.”

Speaking of challenges, Anna Catherine says she’d like to tackle another in the knockout round, where singers get to choose what they sing.

“I would love to do a song that I’ve never done before,” she said. “I think that it’s a little risky, but I think that’s what this competition is about. Taking risks and stepping outside of your norm. I think that is when you learn a lot about yourself as an artist and what you’re capable of.”

Hopefully, fans will get to watch and hear Anna Catherine in the knockout round. The 23-year-old graduate of Belmont University landed a spot on the show by covering “I Could Use a Love Song” by Maren Morris in the blinds, but that performance was montaged as well.

Pre-Voice, she released a trio of singles, two songs with a band called Dirtroad Express and a duet with Jordan Copeland.
