Basically, the block allows one coach to block another coach from landing a highly coveted singer for his or her team.

And each coach only gets one block for the entire blind audition process.

Britton Buchanan and Justin Kilgore were the first two contestants to encounter the block, so Voice Views asked them how they felt about the new rule.

Britton, 17, from Sanford, N.C., turned the chairs of Adam Levine, Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton with his smooth cover of “Trouble.”

But he couldn’t select Adam — the coach he says he was inclined to pick pre-audition — because Blake blocked his longtime Voice coaching rival. He wound up joining Team Alicia.

“I was extremely flattered that Blake decided to use his block on me,” Britton said. “It was crazy. It was kind of surreal.

“I don’t know if it really factored in the decision (on which coach to select). Alicia is a great salesperson. She roped me right in with everything she said. She pretty much had me in the palm of her hand as soon as she started talking.

“I wanted to (chose Adam) going in, but I’m super crazy happy with the decision I made.”

Justin Kilgore, 30, of Buffalo, Texas, became the first four-chair turn recipient of Season 14 with his Monday night show-closing performance of “Tomorrow” by Chris Young.

But the country artist couldn’t select county coach Blake because the county coach was blocked by Alicia. Justin ended up opting to join Team Kelly Clarkson.

“I was completely shocked that Alicia used her block,” Justin told Voice Views. “I did not expect that. It was completely left field. I thought maybe Adam would use his block because Adam and Blake fight constantly about country artists.

“I was just dumbfounded by the whole thing. Super honored. I didn’t know what to say. When I say I was dumbfounded, I stood there like a mime the whole time. But completely honored. Alicia Keys is Alicia Keys and the fact that she waited to use that block — I can’t say enough how humbled I am by that.

“I wasn’t upset about Blake being blocked,” he added. “As a contestant, you want as many options as you can get. But Kelly was always a pick for me. It was between Kelly and Blake no matter what. So the fact that he was blocked just meant that I knew I was going to be going with Kelly regardless.”

Though known primarily as a pop artist, Kelly recorded a #1 and Grammy nominated country duet (“Dont You Want to Stay”) with Jason Aldean. Her husband is Blake Shelton’s manager. Her mother-in-law is Reba McEntire.

“It was a no-brainer,” Justin said.

Two more artists will experience the block before the blind auditions end. Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson have yet to use theirs.

And here’s the irony so far. Neither coach using the block has managed to land the artist on whom they used their block.
