American Idol introduced viewers to at least 11 more contestants who earned golden tickets during Sunday night’s final audition episode.
But the show very little background on two of the night’s most impressive singers.
When Mylon Shamble said she’d be auditioning with “Stand By Me,” the judges initially wondered if there wasn’t a more challenging song she should try.
Then the young lady many know as Loni started singing. Let’s just say the judges didn’t need another song to know she was Hollywood worthy.
Meanwhile, Caitlin Lucia waltzed into the audition room carrying her guitar and wearing an attention-grabbing yellow outfit.
But once she launched into her acoustic version of “I Kissed a Girl,” all attention was on her voice. Katy Perry even suggested Caitlin sang the song better than she did.
Turns out, Caitlin’s taking her third stab at a singing show. At age 18, she auditioned for Season 7 of The Voice — she was introduced to us as a Pez dispenser collector and had more than 1,000 — but failed to turn a chair. She made it to Hollywood on the final season of American Idol on FOX, but failed to make it through Hollywood week.
Determined not to fail in her bid to become a successful musician, Caitlin has since moved from her home in Santa Ana, Calif., to Nashville. In fact, according to her Facebook page, she’ll be performing her first full band show there on April 7.
On her website, the 22-year-old describes her music as modern folk/pop. And she’s released music you can download or stream — a five-song EP called “Us” and a single called “Does She Know.”
And, yep, she lists Katy Perry as one of her influences and inspirations, along with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks and The Grateful Dead.
As for Mylon, she’s now 25 and from Brandenton, Fla. And that little bio bar on Idol describing her as a barbershop bartender wasn’t a misprint. She works at at Modern Gents, a barbershop with a craft beer and wine bar.
Though she always sang, Mylon told The Herald-Tribune newspaper she didn’t get the performing bug until college, when she filled in as a singer in a friend’s band.
“From there it just kind of snowballed into us getting gigs and then me figuring out that I can make more money doing that, singing, instead of waitressing in college,” she told the newspaper.
As for her music, Mylon told her local ABC affiliate her primary influences include Janis Joplin, the Alabama Shakes and Lauryn Hill. Her own sound? “Somewhere between those three,” she says.
Mylon hasn’t released music, but you can check out one of her originals — “Hella Good” — on her Soundcloud page.
Here’s a video recap of all the Hollywood bound singers we met Sunday, beginning with Mylon and Caitlin. for a photo recap, here here.
