It’s an impressive five-track collection called “Battle Within.”
And while that’s also the name of an excellent song from the EP, Whitney told Voice Views she chose “Battle Within” as the name of the project because it “really encompasses the last few years of my life… the ups and downs and everything in between.’
As for the downs, you might recall that Whitney was a Los Angeles-based musician before anxiety and panic attacks prompted her to move back home to Oklahoma.
As for the highs, she regained her passion for music. And that run on The Voice included a celebrated performance of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” with Adam Pearce.
Of course, she was singing covers on The Voice. The new EP is filled with Whitney originals, including the catchy “Stones” and “You Think You’re Right,” a tender EP-closing duet with Robin Hedlund you won’t want to miss.
“I feel like the sound of this record is way more gritty and raw,” Whitney said. “That’s exactly what I wanted. My previous releases are a bit more singer songwriter bubble gum acoustic pop. I wanted to go outside of the lines a bit with this record.”
Another song, “Find Your Love,” features a percussion assist from Aaron Sterling, who’s worked with lots of A-list artists but is probably best known as John Mayer’s drummer.
“I love Aaron Sterling and I’ve been following his work for a while,” Whitney said. “I knew it was a long shot, but I messaged him on Instagram and asked if he’d play on the record and he said YES! I was stoked. So that’s him on ‘Find Your Love,’ just jamming away.”
Physical copies of the new EP — and lots of other goodies — are available from Whitney’s Pledge Music Page.
And her upcoming shows include a Saturday show in Phoenix with fellow former Voice contestant Anthony Alexander.
Whitney also just announced that she’ll be opening for Lori McKenna on her tour this summer. That will include a stop at the World Cafe Live in Philly on July 21. Dustin Christenson, another former Voice contestant, will also be opening on some of Lori’s tour dates.
You can keep up with Whitney through Facebook, her Instagram account and on Twitter, where she’s simply @WhitneyFenimore.
