Want to check out something different and unexpected in terms of a post-Voice release?

Take a listen to “Step Aside,” an impressive seven-song collection from Chance Pena and Hood Taylor.

It’s basically a hip-hop EP, with Hood providing the raps and Chance providing the silky smooth vocals.

And it’s certainly different than anything we’ve heard from Chance since his Top 24 finish on The Voice Season 9.

On Facebook, Chance explains that he started working with Hood about a year ago.

“We went from free styling on the beach to writing and recording songs in my home studio,” writes Chance, who was just 15 when he auditioned for The Voice.

“These seven songs are super different from anything I’ve released so far, but it was super fun to get to work on something outside of my comfort zone with a homie.

“Everything was done in house, I produced the project and Hood and I co-wrote every song. I mention that because it was really cool to be able to go with whatever vibe/concept we were feeling with each song. No certain criteria to meet, just things we really dug.”

For fans of the solo music Chance has released since The Voice — and it’s impressive as well — there’s good news. The Texas-based Chance says he has a solo project due out later this year.

Meanwhile, here’s “Ghost” from “Step Aside.”
