Radha took The Voice stage by storm during the blind audition with her energetic rendition of “Mama Knows Best.”
Judging from the coaches’ comments, she must have displayed similar energy during her Team Adam Levine battle round match.
Radha and Foushee performed “Growing Pains” by Alessia Cara in a performance that was montaged, meaning Voice viewers saw just a few seconds of it.
But Radha prevailed and talked to Voice Views about the battle round during a conference call with the media.
Radha, 20, said she was surprised — but not at all displeased — to be matched up with Foushee.
After all, they’re both Jersey girls.
“I was really happy that we were paired up together,” she said. “I feel like something between both of us is that we definitely both have some spunk on stage. You know, we have groove and soul and so I was really happy about that.
“We both didn’t know the song because it’s a newer song,” added Radha, whose stage name is short for Radharani Martinez. “But regardless of what it was, we both said to each other, ‘We’re going to make this a really memorable battle. It’s going to be cool. We’re going to show you how it’s done; we’re going to show you how Jersey does it.'”
Radha said duets aren’t something she’s accustomed to. As a solo artist, she’d released seven singles over the past two years.
But she said the battle round experience “opened my eyes to something that’s really unique; it’s a different way to catch the audience.”
As to why Adam chose her as the winner, Radha suspects it has something to do with her high-energy performance style.
The same performance style that prompted three chair turns in the blinds. The same performance style that prompted Adam to use his only block on her so that Radha couldn’t even consider joining Team Jennifer.
During the small snippet that aired this week, Adam called her “a force” that’s “impossible to ignore.” Kelly Clarkson called her “a beast” of a performer.
“It honestly means a lot to me,” Radha said of those compliments. “I think that’s the reason why he probably had me going into the knockouts, especially with the energy I bring.
“I remember during rehearsals he said, ‘It doesn’t seem like you ever get nervous.’I’m always trying to put my best foot forward every time, and I’m always trying to be as confident as possible on stage.”
The knockout round begins Monday night on The Voice.
