Kendra Checketts turned just one chair during the blind auditions on The Voice, that of Blake Shelton.
But she turned that one-chair turn into a twice-stolen journey that took her all the way to last week’s Top 24 show.
Now she’s ready to release new music for fans old and new, she tells Voice Views, promising a debut EP of dark pop very soon.
Kendra was 19 when she auditioned for the show. The San Diego area resident had already released five singles prior to the show and is the featured vocalist on a Clueless Kit single (“I’m Not Sober) that’s been streamed more than 500,000 times on Spotify.
Here’s what Kendra told Voice Views about her plans for new music and her time on The Voice.
Voice Views: Which was your favorite performance on The Voice and why?
Kendra: My favorite performance on the Voice was definitely “Bad Guy” (from Top 24 night). It wasn’t my best performance vocally, but it was my favorite song to perform. I wasn’t fully able to hear myself in the beginning of the song, so my vocals weren’t at their best that night, but I had so much fun performing it. I was able to put on a show for everyone, as opposed to singing a quiet ballad. I love being able to bounce around the stage and just have fun with it! It was definitely a song that was very much in my wheelhouse, so I was super excited to perform it.
Voice Views:. Where do you see your time on the show leading you musically? What do you have planned next?
Kendra: Being on the show has definitely prepped me for what I have coming up in the future. I have a single releasing next week and an EP coming very very soon. I was very blessed to have the opportunity to perform on The Voice stage. Meeting people and having the chance for other people to listen to my music from around the world was incredible. I can’t wait for you guys to see what I have coming up!
Voice Views: Do you think you’ll be releasing new music in the future. If so, what can you tell me about that? And, what can fans expect in terms of sound/timing?
Kendra: Yes! I will be releasing a single next week and an EP will follow shortly after. I am so excited to be able to release some music that I have been working on for the past few months. In regards to sound, it is very dark electro pop. Some of it sounds kind of spooky and I want to bring many sounds into my music that people wouldn’t normally hear.
Voice Views: Do you think you grew as an artist as a result of The Voice experience? If so, in what way?
Kendra: I great so much as an artist while on the show. I was able to perform on a huge stage and work with awesome artists like Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Also, working under a lot of pressure was really cool. I love being overwhelmed with music because it doesn’t give me any chance to overthink.
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience on the show?
Kendra: I have had the best time on the show because I met people I will consider my best friends moving forward and working with the coaches was amazing. There are not a lot of people that can say they have been able to sing on The Voice, so having this journey was incredible. I wouldn’t change anything for the world.
