It’s an EP called “Numb3rz,” and it’s an impressive and diverse seven-song collection.
Highlights include the seductive “2 Soon,” featuring a rap assist from Noochie, and the reggae-flavored and fun party song “Dis Ting,” on which Funsho gets a helping hand from King Kanja.
The smooth R&B track “Legends 4 Life” was the lead single, and Funsho dropped an accompanying music video in February.
From Lagos, Nigeria, Funsho was 28 when he auditioned for The Voice, turned three chairs and earned a spot on Team Adam Levine. He wound up advancing to the Top 24.
Pre-show, he’d released a pair of albums and a 2018 EP called “Free Love.”
Funsho told Voice Views that “Numb3rz” features a mix of songs written prior to The Voice and after the show.
“The first half of ‘Millions’ was written before The Voice, while the second half was written after, which I think gives the song two very distinct and interesting perspectives in the verses,” he said.
As for “2 Soon,” Funsho said that was written about a past relationship “during a time when I wasn’t sure where it was going so I looked back to reflect on how it started.
“The song is really me internally challenging my own fear of commitment at the time, and embracing the reality of what I was actually feeling,” he added. “The relationship eventually didn’t work out, but I learned a lot about myself, gained a great friend, and got a really dope song out of it.”
And how about that title? There isn’t a song on the EP called “Numb3rz.”
“I decided to call the EP ‘NUMB3RZ’ because of what the lyrics mean to me personally, and because of what I want people to take away from hearing my stories,” Funsho explained.
“I hope people feel inspired to continue to chase their dream no matter what juncture they’re currently at, and not be solely defined by numbers such as money, age or social media statistics.”
Funsho has a number of shows coming up on both coasts, including a couple of Preakness related events in Baltimore later this week and a show at L.A.’s The Viper Room later this month. Check out all the upcoming dates on his Facebook page.
Here’s “Dis Ting.”
