When she was still in the womb, Kiara Brown says her dad would write songs on her mom’s stomach.
Twenty-one years later, Kiara is a singer-songwriter who calls music the foundation of her life.
She has two EPs out and more original music on The Voice.
And she has a spot on The Voice thanks to a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin'” that turned two chairs and landed her a spot on Team Gwen Stefani.
Here’s what Kiara told Voice Views about her blind audition experience and her plans for new music.
Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 17 and what prompted you to do it?
Kiara: I was invited to audition and wanted to give it a shot!
Voice Views: Why did you choose ““Free Fallin’”” for your audition song? And what was the strategy behind that largely acoustic opening with minimal support from the band?
Kiara: “Free Fallin'” is one of my favorite songs to sing and I’ve sung it at a lot of my performances. Tom Petty wrote it so beautifully. One of my favorite versions of the song is John Mayer’s version and it is very acoustic, so I pulled a lot of inspiration from it and then added some of my own ideas. I didn’t really plan the arrangement out too much, I just have allowed the song to evolve over time.
Voice Views: Why did you decide to join Team Gwen?
Kiara: When Gwen mentioned me being a songwriter and her hearing my creativity, it really struck a chord with me, she said she wanted to help me grow in different areas as an artist. Also, I really want to learn from her as a performer because she’s so great on stage and I felt I could get great tips from her on how to draw an audience in!
Voice Views: You released a pair of EPs in 2017. Are more original releases in the works? And how would you describe your sound?
Kiara: I did! I plan to release more music in the near future! I’d say my sound is “universal.” I’ve always said that because I want my music to touch everybody, so I pull a little bit from every genre. I grew up listening to country, rock, gospel, R&B, jazz and just about anything you can name. I want my music to represent all genres and I believe that even on my older EPs there’s a song for everyone and I hope that will be the case for my next project!
