His audition: Steve Knill, 37, of San Francisco, Calif., performed “Up To the Mountain” by Patty Griffin. His soulful version of the song earned an almost immediate chair turn from Kelly Clarkson. He proceeded to show off all sorts of vocal gymnastics. But Kelly was the only coach to turn, meaning Steve automatically became Team Kelly.

Here’s more about Steve.

* Steve hails from Apache Junction, Ariz., and grew up around music because his dad played guitar and his mother sang in church, according to his Voice bio.

* Steve, that bio indicates, didn’t become interested in music until high school when he started producing rap beats.

* His interested in singing was piqued at age 20 when he won a karaoke contest.

* He later joined the Phoenix Metro Men’s Chorus, an all-gay chorus, in 2013 and came out to his friends and family.

* According to his website, Steve is also a producer and songwriter and has used the stage name Steve Mash.

* In fact, since 2013, he’s released five singles as Steve Mash Music that are still available on Apple Music. The most recent, “Around My Way,” with Beretta Swayy, came out in 2018.

* Over the years, he’s produced, written and provided vocals for more than 50 artists in the Phoenix area, his web bio says.

* While Steve’s been involved in music for 15 years, he didn’t start trying to make a living through music until 2014, “when he moved to LA with his recording equipment, car, clothes and nothing else.”

* He’s performed at a variety of venues in L.A., including Vitellos Supper Club in Studio City and Lucky Strike at LA Live. Since the move, he told Voice Views he’s been focusing more on singing than producing.

* His Voice bio says he’s now living in San Fran with his partner, Don. In fact, judging from his Instagram page, they were married Aug. 31 and Steve sang at the wedding!
