Turns out, the young rocker from Charlotte, N.C., did that quite impressively.
Jake turned three chairs in his blind audition, opted for a spot on Team Gwen and advanced all the way to the Top 20 on Season 17.
His time on the show ended in the live playoffs, following a performance of “Turning Tables” that still drew accolades from his coach.
Here’s what Jake, 24 when he auditioned, told Voice Views about his time on the show and his music moving forward.
Voice Views: What do you consider your biggest takeaway / lesson learned from The Voice experience?
Jake: I really feel that the takeaway and lesson overall has been invaluable. One thing that this experience on The Voice has taught me about myself and others is that there are so many cream of the crop musicians on the show that work so hard for their love of music and we were all there together with a craft we’ve been molding for years, and I feel that we all got to refine our sound more with how awesomely rigorous the show is at producing a put together musical experience and platform.
Getting to explore that while performing on live television has been a landmark experience for my life. Most importantly, the positive energy of the show is so contagious and makes me feel reborn in my life and career and has taught me that no matter how intense things get around you, you can still move forward gracefully and with a lot of love in your heart while conquering new obstacles.
Voice Views: Which was your favorite Voice performance and why?
Jake: A performance of mine? It’s hard to choose but I really felt like the knockout round episode when I performed “Powerful” by Major Lazer was a breaking point for me in the show and musically very fulfilling with the version that was arranged. I was obsessed with how great the band sounded! It was like a breakthrough performance for me because I got to show a more melodic, bluesier side of me and I got to do a unique version of a popular modern sounding tune.
Voice Views: What are you post-Voice plans musically? Where are you hoping this opportunity leads?
Jake: I hope this opportunity leads me to doing what I love: writing, recording, and touring, buJaket on a bigger scale!
Voice Views: Do you plan to release new music anytime soon? If so, can you tell me about that — what you’re planning, what fans can expert in terms of sound and the timetable for doing?
Jake: Yes! I have new music that I’m pumped to be able to release. I am planning to make a Kickstarter because I want to be able to provide a high-quality release with not just new tunes to listen too, but with music videos to watch with them and give an interactive experience of the making and rising of this new release, and this will be a great way to reach all of my fans and music lovers and be able to give back for the huge support and rallying I’ve received from everyone. A tour is also being put together!!
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about The Voice experience?
Jake: I just want to add that I have so much respect and appreciation for everyone that I met in The Voice. I want to say thank you to Gwen and all of the coaches, you are truly beautiful souls and it is a dream come true to be able to work with and have lifelong memories with great artists like you. Thank you to The Voice’s awe-inspiring band, the amazing professional crew members and the production team overall who move mountains!! It was such a pleasure working with everyone on this show — Whoohoo!!!
