One of the singers we might meet is DeWayne Crocker Jr. He recently announced his audition on social media.
Here’s more about DeWayne.
* He appeared on national TV back in August 2015 after winning BET’s Sunday’s Best Race to the Stage online competition at age 19.
* DeWayne beat out 15,000 auditioners for that honor; his cover of “Precious Lord” earned him a spot in the Top 10.
* According to his Facebook bio, he began singing in church at a young age.
* But DeWayne told the Pensacola News Journal that he started to take music much more seriously when he sang a gospel song to win a talent show at Pensacola High School in Florida when he was 13 years old.
* Prior to the BET Sunday’s Best experience, DeWayne told that site that he had auditioned for The X Factor once and The Voice twice, but failed to advance past the second round of auditions.
* He also released a single called “I Don’t Know” around that time, but it’s no longer available on streaming sites.
* He released a second single called “Never Give Up” in 2017, returned to BET to perform the song (check out the video below) and has done extensive touring as a Christian artist.
* DeWayne recently turned 23 and he also recently posted photos following his graduation from Pensacola State College, noting he’s the first — but hopefully not the last — member of his family to earn a college degree.
* DeWayne will enter American Idol with a sizable social media following, including 27,000 followers on his YouTube channel, nearly 16,000 on Instagram and more than 13,000 on Facebook.
Keep checking back. Lots more Season 18 profiles coming.
