Her audition: Gigi Hess, 22, of Lovington, N.M., performed “Lovesong” by The Cure. Gigi’s tender opening prompted an almost immediate chair turn from Kelly Clarkson. And that prompted Gigi to do a little hop on stage. Kelly wound up being the only coach to turn, in spite of an impressive ending. That meant Gigi automatically became Team Kelly.

Here’s more about Gigi.

* She’s a soulful singer songwriter from Lovington, a small town in southeastern New Mexico.

* Gigi says she started writing songs at age 11 and taught herself various instruments.

* In 2013, she recorded a six-track EP called “Gigi” that she recorded as the Amusment Park Recording Studio in Lubbock, Texas.

* At the time, she described herself as being influenced by Beyonce’s voice and Taylor Swift’s pop songwriting.

* That was before she headed to South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, where she was a commercial music major.

* She was also part of the college’s touring ensemble also known as “Calcium” and says it’s while at college she concluded “I’ll never be happy doing anything other than music.”

* In a vlog posted last May, she said she and some friends were relocating to Austin, Texas, to try to break into the music scene there.

* She and those friends were an alt rock band known as Pleasant Surprise, and you can check out a snippet of their performance at Cavern Fest in Carlsbad, N.M. here.

* Gigi announced her audition for The Voice about a week ago, and you can check out her cover of “I’d Rather Go Blind” below.
