Chelle needed just a couple of notes to earn a chair turn from Blake Shelton on Season 18 of The Voice.

The 18-year-old from Bargersville, Indiana, wound up with three coaches to choose from following her cover of Billie Eilish’s “idontwannabeyouanymore.”

And while Nick Jonas said she’s the type of artist he’d love to write songs for, Chelle picked the coach who offered her the most constructive criticism after that blind audition — Kelly Clarkson.

Here’s what Chelle told Voice Views about that blind audition and her decision to join Team Kelly.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 18 and what prompted you to do it?

Chelle: I started by surrounding myself with family because they are the ones who push me the hardest. And, honestly, my mom prompted me to even try out for The Voice. She always pushed me to go further and further with my music.

Voice Views: Why did you choose “idontwannabeyouanymore” for your audition song? What’s your performance history with that song (for instance, is it one you’ve played often)?

Chelle: That song is such an emotional ballad. I chose it because it’s a perfect fit for today’s age where a lot of what you do and how good you do it is based off how you look or what size you are … I saw it as a great opportunity to spread the message that there’s more to everyone and everything than just looks.

Voice Views: Did you have a coaching preference heading into the blind audition? And why did you decide to join Team Kelly?

Chelle: I absolutely loved Kelly before any of this went down, so I was really hoping she’d turn. And although Nick and Blake had amazing things to tell me, when Kelly started talking about overthinking I knew she would be a good fit. To work with someone who could help me overcome that would be incredible so I went with her!!

Voice Views: What was that blind audition experience like? You’d barely started singing and already had a chair turn.

Chelle: It was more than anything I could have imagined. When I saw Blake turn, I knew my goal was to make every chair turn and even though that didn’t happen (John soon regretted it lol) I knew I just had to stay focused and make sure they heard the story I was telling!
