Samantha Howell will be part of a new twist on The Voice during the knockout round.
That’s because she was saved by Kelly Clarkson at the end of her battle round match with Megan Danielle, which aired Monday.
Megan and Samantha performed “Top of the World” by Patti Griffin. Afterward, Kelly declared Megan the winner, but immediately saved Samantha.
That means the 19-year-old from Virginia Beach will be part of a four-way knockout round match with Todd Michael Hall of Team Blake, Michael Williams of Team Nick and Nelson Cade III from Team John.
Here’s what Samantha told Voice Views about her battle round experience and that upcoming match.
Voice Views: How did that song choice work for you? Did it pose any special challenges?
Samantha: When me and Megan were first given our song (“Top of the World” by Patty Griffin) neither of us had ever heard it. That was a challenge in itself, having to learn it in quickly before our rehearsal with Kelly and Dua Lipa.
After we both got comfortable with the song, we fell in love with it. It’s such a vulnerable yet powerful song and we were both so excited to perform it. My nerves snuck up on me a bit on performance day, but overall I’m happy with the performance we gave and I was so thankful that Kelly used her save on me!
Voice Views: Are you used to singing with others or performing duets? And, if so, do you think that worked to your advantage in preparing for the battle?
Samantha: Neither me or Megan had done duets much in the past, and definitely not on stage like that. We learned a lot from each other while preparing for our battle and I wouldn’t have wanted to share the stage with anyone else!
Voice Views: Both you and Megan got great feedback from the coaches. What did you think about the likelihood of a save/steal once Megan advanced?
Samantha: I didn’t give a performance that I would consider to be my best, so after Megan won I was convinced I was going home. It was SUCH a relief when Kelly hit that button to save me.
Voice Views: Now you’re part of a brand new twist on the show, a four-way knockout. Your reaction to that? Any special strategy entering that performance?
Samantha: I’m excited to be part of the new twist! I think it’s going to be really exciting to watch. All 4 of us are so different, so I think that is going to make it really interesting! My only strategy is to give a performance I’m proud of, so that win or lose, I’m happy with the performance I gave.
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about the battle round experience
Samantha: Working with Kelly was so amazing. What you see on TV is what you get; she is so genuine and so sweet! I’m so excited to continue on Team Kelly!
