Megan Danielle scored the biggest upset on the final night of battles on The Voice.
The 17-year-old from Douglasville, Ga., turned just Kelly Clarkson’s chair during the blind auditions.
Her Team Kelly battle round partner Samantha Howell turned three.
But Kelly declared Danielle the winner following their performance of “Top of the World” by Patty Griffin.
In fact, Kelly was so impressed with Megan, she called her “the dark horse of the whole competition.”
Samantha also wound up advancing; Kelly used her only save to keep her on the show.
Here’s what Danielle told Voice Views about that battle round experience.
Voice Views: What do you think was the key to your success in the battle round? And did you feel like a bit of an underdog having turned just the one chair in the blind auditions?
Megan: Since I only had one chair tune in the blind audition, I definitely felt a little bit like an underdog. But I didn’t let it affect me. I knew that Kelly turned for a reason and I wanted to show her and the other coaches what I am capable of. I believe the key to my success in the battle round was having a connection with the song and telling it through my voice.
Voice Views: How did the song choice work for you? Did it pose any special challenges?
Megan: The song choice was absolutely amazing in my opinion. I love country music. It definitely made me open up more, showed more of my range and it helped me show more of what my voice is capable of.
Voice Views: Did you have much experience singing duets or performing with others prior to the battle round? And, if so, do you think that worked to your advantage in preparing for the battle and how so?
Megan: I’ve never really had any experience singing with others before the battles, but I’m really happy I did because it pushed me to learn new things — and to share the stage with Samantha was absolutely so special. She’s become one of my best friends!!
Voice Views: Anything else you’d like to add about the battle round experience?
Megan: The battle round was just so cool. It was by far one of the coolest things I’ve ever had the opportunity to do: working with Samantha, Kelly AND Dua. This really helped me learn new things as an artist!
Voice Views: And, obviously, you can’t talk about song choice, but is there a side of your artistry you haven’t gotten to display yet that you hope to in coming rounds?
Megan: In the upcoming rounds, I hope to show more of my rock side, but really just to tell people my story with what I am singing.
