Alex Preston cracks iTunes chart for American Idol

Jennifer Lopez might have thought Alex Preston sucked the life out of “Every Breath You Take,” but fans apparently loved it.

Alex’s cover of the classic 1980s hit was the top performing song on iTunes early today, and the trend continued 24 hours after last night’s performance show began.

As of 8 p.m., Alex was sitting at number 101 on the overall chart and number 31 on the iTunes pop chart.

Two other contestants snuck into the iTunes Top 200, and nearly everyone at least charted on a genre chart.

The two exceptions: Malaya Watson and Dexter Roberts.

Here’s the 8 p.m. rundown on the artists who charted.

* Caleb Johnson with “Faithfully” at number 2 on the rock chart, number 164 on the overall chart;

* Sam Woolf with “Time After Time” at number 50 on the pop chart, number 198 on the overall chart;

* C.J. Harrris with “Free Fallin'” at number 150 on the country chart.

* Jess Meuse with “Call Me” at number 150 on the alternative chart.

* Jena Irene with “I Love Rock and Roll” at number 177 on the alternative chart.
