Who will take the Season 5 title on The Voice tonight?
Well, let’s just say all signs point toward Tessanne Chin.
Especially if the voting overnight and into this morning followed the trend of the iTunes downloads.
If you missed that blog, Tessanne had the two most popular songs on iTunes from last night’s show, her splendid version of “I Have Nothing” and her “Let It Be” duet with Adam Levine.
All three of her songs from Monday were in the Top 20 on iTunes when voting closed.
That wasn’t the case for Jacquie Lee or Will Champlin.
And she had a fourth song in the Top 20 — “Bridge Over Troubled Water” — from last week.
That wasn’t the case for Jacquie Lee or Will Champlin.
If Tessanne is crowned The Voice Season 5 winner in a couple of hours, it will be a well-deserved honor.
Will Champlin survived three saves to make the finals in one of the most impressive comebacks the show has seen.
Jacquie Lee impressed with her big voice and her stage presence, both made more amazing because she’s just 16.
But it was Tessanne who turned in one solid performance after the other from the first time she stepped onto The Voice stage, never faltering along the way.
Viewers were a bit slow to warm to the native of Jamaica. None of her first five live performances cracked the Top 20 on iTunes.
But that sure changed. Tessanne’s songs have been number one on iTunes the past two weeks, marking the first two times that has happened in Season 5.
The performances:* We start off with the top 20 from Season 5 singing “Tonight is the Night.” Hey, there’s a James Wolpert sighting. The lad from Lancaster made it to the Top 5. Shame they didn’t turn on his mic for that line. Dang. Tessanne just delivered a heck of a line on that song. Nice upbeat way to begin the night.
* Jacquie Lee is first to present her bring-back performance. She’ll be joined by fellow New Jersey teen Caroline Pennell, James Wolpert, Matthew Schuler and Cole Vosbury. And they’ll tackle “Bohemian Rhapsody.” That was a hoot. Not to mention a whole lot better than I expected it to be. Great seeing Jacquie having so much fun and flashing that big smile of hers.
* Next, Tessanne sings with Celine Dion. They’ll perform Celine’s “Love Can Move Mountains.” That last bit by Tessanne — another example of why she should be The Voice for Season 5
* One Republic takes the stage now to perform their new single “I Lived.” Decent song. Later on, we’ll hear the song Ryan Tedder has written as the Voice winner’s first single. Never thrilled by that concept. Tessanne Chin, Jacquie Lee and Will Champlin aren’t vocal mirror images of one another. How do you write a song that would fit any one of the three?
* Five of this season’s top males — Matthew Schuler, Nick Hawk, Josh Logan, Ray Boudreaux and Preston Pohl — take on “Treasure” in a performance I’m pretty sure we won’t remember tomorrow.* Will Champlin’s bring-back performance will be “Wagon Wheel” with Jonny Gray, Cole Vosbury, Caroline Pennell and Austin Jenckes. Hey that was pretty good. Maybe they should form a quintet after the season ends.
* Paramore takes the stage to sing its new single, “Ain’t It Fun,” accompanied by Jacquie Lee. Well, that was certainly a high-energy performance.
* Several of the top ladies from Season 5 return to sing Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Nice to see Kat Robichaud again I really expected her to go much further in Season 5. As for that group number, the less said probably the better. Other participates: Grey, Shelbie Z., Tamara Chauniece, Stephanie Anne Johnson and Amber Nicole.
* Now Celine Dion and Ne-Yo will perform their new collaboration, “Incredible.” Celine seems to have forgotten part of her dress.
* Will’s turn to sing with a favorite artist. He and Aloe Blacc will sing “Wake Me Up.” Hey, this is really good. One of the best performances we’ve seen tonight.
* Tessanne takes the stage for the final bring-back performance. She’s decided to perform with Grey, Olivia Henken, Preston Pohl and James Wolpert, singing “Hold On, I’m Coming.” Nice job, group.
* One of the performances you’ve probably been waiting for, Lady Gaga performing “Do What You Want.” And after the first run-through of the chorus, she’s joined by Christina Aguilera. That apparently is the first time the ladies have met.
OK, and finally, it’s time for results.
In third place on The Voice: Will Champlin.
So, as predicted, it’s down to the two ladies, Jacquie Lee and Tessanne Chin.
And the winner is: Tessanne Chin.
Personally, I’m a big fan of Jacquie Lee. But I have to say, voters got it right.
From her first performance to her last, Tessanne was the most impressive contestant during Season 5.
And I appreciate the fact that they left enough time in the telecast for her to sing a final song. They haven’t always done that in the past.
