Claire Dejean has a background in musical theater.

And the teenager from Dallas says she thinks that helped her during the battle round on The Voice.

Claire advanced after a battle round match with Josh Davis; they sang “All This Love” by JP Cooper.

The Voice aired just a tiny snippet of their duet, but Claire talked to Voice Views about the performance during a conference call with the media.

“I loved my partner; we had so much fun together,” said Claire, 17 when she auditioned and landed a spot on Team Kelly Clarkson.

“And we have so much fun on the stage. I wish that America got to see all the amazing work we did and all the hard work that we did. I felt really confident with it. I felt like we both performed really well. And, obviously, I’m happy with the outcome.”

During her bio package on The Voice, Claire said her mom put her in a musical theater production when she was in third grade and she’s been involved in musical theater ever since.

That’s required performing duets, Claire said, though obviously not on a stage as big as The Voice.

Meanwhile, Claire said she was able to “discover this new soulful part of my voice” while trying to counter the vocal power Josh brought to the battle.

Before announcing Claire the winner, Kelly praised the “angelic beautiful softness” of her voice.

“One thing that the coaches mentioned when we were finished with our battle was just, I guess my stage presence really shined in our performance,” Claire said.

“And so I think that being with Josh, who’s so powerful, and working with Kelly really brought out like this new side of my performance, and I think that it taught me a lot about the kind of performer I want to be.”

Claire now advances to the knockout round, which begins Monday night on The Voice.
