Just 17 when she auditioned for The Voice, Claire Dejean turned two chairs with her performance of “Hurt Somebody” and joined Team Kelly Clarkson.
She wound up making it all the way to the knockout round with Team Kelly.
Kelly declared Claire the winner following her battle round performance of “All This Love” with Josh Davis; then paired her with good friend Abby Cates in the knockout round.
This time, Kelly chose Abby as the winner, though Claire also received praise for her performance of “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back” by Shawn Mende.
Here’s what Claire, from Dallas, Texas, had to say about her experience on The Voice and her music moving forward.
Voice Views: The knockout round was filmed in mid-August. What have you been doing musically since then?
Claire: A whole lot of writing!! I’m super excited to be working on my own music this year as well as further pursuing my career in musical theater. I’m really happy with everything I’ve been creating and I can’t wait for people to hear this intimate side of me!
Voice Views: Where do you see The Voice experience leading you musically? Are there any plans to release new music and, if so, what can you tell me about those?
Claire: Right now I’m working on some new musical projects as I mentioned. I don’t have any release plans yet as I want to be able to take my time with these new records because they are dear to my heart and the first things I’m officially releasing into the world. I’m also really excited to post more covers on YouTube, gig a lot more, and just get my voice out there.
Voice Views: You posted a best friends photo of yourself and Abby Cates to Facebook. Can you tell me a little about that and what it was like going against a friend in the knockout round?
Claire: Abby and I grew very close at the beginning of the process, so our friendship was very strong by the time knockouts happened. She’s like a sister to me. It’s never easy to compete against your friends, but we have such a mutual respect for each other as artists and promised each other that we would both be happy no matter the outcome. It was also fun that we were paired together because we got to spend a lot of time together and share so many fun experiences. I love her so much and will always be rooting for her!
Voice Views: Which was your favorite Voice performance and why?
Claire: My favorite performance was my battle with Josh Davis! It’s unfortunate because it was montaged, but I can only hope that someday they might release it in full! I felt like in that performance I let my nerves go, connected with the audience (and Josh), and really enjoyed every part of it. I will never forget the fun had on the stage that day. It was absolutely incredible.
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about The Voice experience?
Claire: It was so amazing and will always be a special part of who I am, but I’m very excited for the world to learn more about who I truly am as a person and artist!
